Tesla households are better served by the Tesla Universal Wall Connector, which charges both NACS and J1772 vehicles natively. How much does it cost to install a home EV charger?

Budget $400–$1,200 for a straightforward install within about 25 feet of your panel, and $1,500–$2,500 or more for a long wire run. Angi’s 2026 national average is roughly $1,180 including hardware. A panel upgrade adds $1,300–$3,000+, which is why load-sharing gear like a smart splitter is often the cheapest way to fit a charger onto a full panel.

Is a 40-amp or a 48-amp charger better?

A 48-amp charger delivers up to 11.5 kW versus 9.6 kW for a 40-amp unit — about 2 to 5 extra miles of range per hour. But 48-amp charging requires a hardwired install on a 60-amp circuit, while most 40-amp chargers can simply plug into a NEMA 14-50 outlet. If your panel has capacity and your EV accepts 48 amps, hardwire; otherwise a 40-amp plug-in is cheaper to install and nearly as fast.

NEMA 14-50 plug-in or hardwired — which should I choose?

Plug-in installs are cheaper, portable when you move, and let you swap chargers in minutes, but NEC 2023 requires a GFCI breaker and you are capped at 40-amp charging. Hardwiring is required for 48-amp charging, is cleaner for outdoor mounting, and avoids receptacle overheating and GFCI nuisance trips. Hardwire if you are staying put; use an outlet if you rent or move often.

Will a J1772 charger work with a Tesla?

Yes. Every Tesla ships with or supports a J1772-to-NACS adapter, so any Level 2 charger we recommend will charge a Tesla.
